A View From Stillwater

While I am happy that the Union and its workers get to keep their jobs, I feel for the Stillwater workers that if they were Union, they would have rights and protections!

Here is what the Stillwater local newspaper had to say.

Mercury Marine says it's packing up and moving its MerCruiser operation north to Wisconsin - apparently along with nearly 400 Stilwater jobs.

Now, the company said, Mercury Marine will move its Stilwater interests north over the next two years.

In a released statement, Mark Schwabero, president of Mercury Marine, said, “After weeks of intense discussions and completion of the voting process, we accept the union’s ratification of our contract proposal.

Wisconsin worker Felipe Rodriguez said Friday night with the vote, all the stress is gone.

“We are excited that we got the third vote and that we are keeping jobs in Fond du Lac.  We are excited and looking forward to moving forward … It would have been great if everyone could have kept their jobs.”

While some Wisconsin workers rejoice, Stillwater reels from the imminent implications of the vote.

“Disappointed.  Hurt,” said 16-year Stillwater plant employee Todd Pierce.  “It’s been a major part of my life.  I’ve got no voice.  This was decided by someone else … (Mercury) tore up my family and my life.  That ain’t no way to run a business.”

In disagreement with and numb from the outcome, at times Larry Brown, president of the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, spoke with a voice that broke with emotion to about 20 workers gathered at Brannigans at 600 McElroy Rd.

“I don’t think it will be a good decision in the long term for Mercury Marine.”  Brown said.  "It elevated the union to a pedestal they won’t be able to knock them off of.  The union will be claiming victory and that they came in on a white horse to save jobs … It’s a good win for them.  I am just not happy with how it came about.”

To ease the angst, he bought a round of drinks for the bar.

Brown said the team - from Stillwater economic developers to state lawmakers - to keep Mercury in Stillwater put forth an amazing effort.  One team member, Rep, Cory Williams, D-Stillwater, said Thursday he will look into repealing state tax credits the state gave Mercury Marine in legislation he helped get passed this spring.

Meanwhile, the company's nearly 400 Stillwater employees wonder what's next.

“In some ways,” said Larry Draper, of Mercury in Stillwater, “It’s a relief to know.

“Everybody will pick themselves up and go back to work," Draper said.  "They will continue to do a quality job.”

“At least there is some finality to the last two weeks.  It’s not the outcome we wanted by any stretch of imagination,” said Brown.  “Our concerns now are to address the needs of the 385 Stillwater employees.  That’s what it’s always been about.”

On Tuesday, said Brown, will start the process of working with Mercury for a smooth transition and to investigate other options for workers.

The property is ideal for another manufacturer, Brown said.

“Over the next 18, 24, 36 months, this plant will phase out.  This will bring along another opportunity to fill that space,” Brown said.

Undaunted, Brown said, “We will work to find suitable tenants or a buyer to develop property as soon as we get in next week.”

The Dear Leader to address the nation's school children on September 8th.

President Barack Obama has plans to speak to all the school children in the United States on Tuesday, September 8th at noon.  His speech will be broadcast on television.   Captive audience?  You bet. 

Now, this wouldn't be so terrifying if it was President Bush or even President Clinton speaking.  Most in the public would assume that the president would be giving a rah-rah pep talk concerning education.  With Obama, however, we know that will not be the case.  Given Obama's background, friendships and associations with socialists, communists, Marxists, and terrorists,  his socialist plans for America, and obvious dislike for his own country, we really have to question what his motives are.  Is he trying to indoctrinate our youth?  From materials provided by the White House to the schools in advance, it is plain to see that  Obama's message is NOT a simple "stay in school, do your homework, work hard."  Rather, his speech pertains to....himself.  What the school kids can do to help Obama.***  What they like about his messages.  How inspirational he is, and blah blah blah.....  There are also several recommended activities to do prior to the speech, as well as after. 

This is something I could see happening in North Korea.  Or something that actually did happen in Germany with the Hitler Youth.  Not in America.  Please contact your school principal and/or superintendent to see what your school has planned for the kids on September 8th.  Many school are opting NOT to participate in this - good for them!  Some parents are opting to extend the long Labor Day weekend to include Tuesday.  Whatever you decide to do, please make sure your schools know that something like this is NOT acceptable.

"In general, I don't think there's a problem if the president uses the bully pulpit to tell kids to work hard, study hard and things like that. But there are some troubling hints in this, both educationally and politically," said Neal McCluskey, associate director of Cato Institute's Center for Educational Freedom.

Among the concerns, McCluskey said, is the notion that students who do not support Obama or his educational policies will begin the school year "behind the eight ball," or somehow academically trailing their peers.

"It essentially tries to force kids to say the president and the presidency is inspiring, and that's very problematic," McCluskey said. "It's very concerning that you would do that."

Parents of public school students would also have to pay for that "indoctrination," regardless of their political background, he said.

"That's the fundamental problem. They could easily be funding the indoctrination of their children."

How true.  Do not let this type of Orwellian behavior on the part of Barack Obama slip by without question.  Talk to your kids.  If they do not know what may be planned for them on Tuesday, September 8th, be sure to  contact your schools to find out.  Let them know your concerns!  Remember, this is America - not a communist country - at least for the time being.

I've hit the sort-of big time.

This one is just for John Foust.  He pointed out in another of my posts that I had been awarded a prestigious award from the widely-circulated (not!) Shepherd Express.  I wrote a blog on this award on another site :  livinglakecountry.com.  I meant to post it here, but ran into computer problems and was without my computer for over a week.  Add a family vacation in the mix, and I just didn't get to it until now.  So, John Foust, this one's for you!  Enjoy!

Darn!  Fellow blogger Jacob Pickard stole my thunder,  by reporting on a recent award I just received.  However, I wanted to write about this honor myself.  Seems that the liberal rag, "The Shepherd Express," saw fit to nominate me for its'  "Jerk of the Week" award.  This was due to my recent blog called "Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett attacked while dialing 911." 

In researching the "Jerk of the Week" award, I came to realize I am in great company.  Past recipients have included:  Paul Ryan, James Sensenbrenner, Scott Walker, J.B. Van Hollen, Kevin Fischer, and Charlie Sykes.  WOW!  I must be doing something right.  Hopefully those wacky folks at the Shepherd Express will see fit to continue to read my blogs and I may become a multiple award winner...

By the way, I also wrote the folks at the Shepherd Express a note to thank them for the award.  I did express my dismay, tho, at the fact that they distorted my words.  For example, they claimed that I blamed Mayor Barrett for his own beating.  This is not true.  I never said such a thing nor even implied it, nor do I even believe it.  It's ridiculous.  In addition, the Shepherd Express wrote that I said Barrett would not have been attacked if he had been carrying a gun.  Again, not true.  I did not say that.  My post was a "what if" in regards to concealed carry.  What if Mayor Barrett had a gun - concealed or "open carry?"  Would the outcome have been different?  No one knows for sure, not me or the anti-gun liberal crowd.  However, it is my own personal belief that if Mayor Barrett had a gun, things probably would have turned out differently and he would not have ended up in the hospital - the victim of a severe beating.

In conclusion, I wish the Mayor well.  As I have said before, I believe Mayor Barrett to be a nice, decent guy.  No one deserves to be attacked like he was, coming to the aid of a woman and her grandchild. He is, indeed, a hero.  I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Now, if the Shepherd Express has chosen to distort my words and bestow upon me the "Jerk of the Week" award, that is fine and good.   In the future, tho, if I win again, I hope they don't manipulate the sentences and beliefs in my blog just to fit their own agenda.  Thanks again, Shepherd Express.  By receiving this award, I realize all my efforts to promote conservatism, fight liberalism, and save America are not in vain! 

Where was the media?

I attended Paul Ryan's Listening Session at Greendale High School Auditorium on Monday, August 31 from 3:30-4:30 pm.

The auditorium was packed and about 150 people were still waiting outside that could not get in.  This was moved to here in anticipation of the large crowds.

Now I did see a TV crew there, but didn’t see and mention of it on the local news and the Milwaukee Urinal didn’t have a peep on it.

Now an educated guess was that the TV station didn’t see any of the good protesters that they drool for.  There was no uprising!  No pushing and shouting!  No crazy wingnuts!  Just people gathering upset at health care changes being rammed down out throats!

So that must mean to the MSM, no story.  They would not want to report the news as it is.  Unless they can sensationalize it, in their minds people don’t care.  See it doesn’t serve the left leaning media to show how popular these “Listening Sessions” are and how much people are upset and DON’T want “public option”, better know as governmental run health care.

Republican Congresswoman: GOP is Looking for 'Great White Hope'

Republican Representative Lynn Jenkins of Kansas told a recent gathering that her party is seeking a "great white hope" to stand against the agenda of Democratic President Barack Obama and his party.

Jenkins was captured on videotape making the comment while discussing the future prospects of her party after it lost Congress to the Democrats and lost the White House to Obama, the nation's first black president.

A spokeswoman for Jenkins said the Congresswoman has apologized for her choice of words and didn't mean to offend anyone.  Kenny Johnston of the Kansas Democratic Party called her statement regrettable, saying she should be discussing solutions.

GOP Leader: License to Hunt Obama

Rex Rammell (R-ID) who is going to run in the May 2010 primary has said, he was just joking when he said he would buy a license to hunt President Obama.  Rammell made the comment at a Republican rally in Twin Falls.

The crowd was talking about a new program for wolf hunting where hunters must buy a wolf tag for $11.50 when a person asked Rammell a question about “Obama Tags” and Rammell responded “The Obama Tags?  We’d buy some of those.”

The Associated Press contacted Rammell on Thursday and he said, “I was just being sarcastic and see no reason to apologize for the comment.”

Glenn Beck Ratings Rise

Glenn Beck has been in the middle of controversy lately.  A few weeks ago on Fox News, Beck called President Obama "racist.”  Which did not settle well with many Americans.

Many Americans started calling Beck’s advertisers and demanding they pull their ads of Glenn Beck’s 5pm TV show on Fox News Channel.  Which many advertisers did.

This has seemed to backfire Beck on August 26th had over 3 million views and actually beat Bill O'Reilly in the demographic of 25 to 54 year olds by 12,000 viewers.  This is unusual since Beck airs before primetime where fewer people watch TV

While some advertisers have left the show, others are picked up.  Ratings are important, but in the end, it is all about money.

Speaking of ratings Newt Gingrich had this to say about Obama’s ratings that you should take notice.
